"Christy Cusses, Heidi Heals, Matt Maneuvers And Rob Realigns….Again"
Posted by Grimme on 2003-04-25 |
Episode 10 and things are starting to get ugly all around, in the game and outside, courtesy of CBS who showed real cruelty dealing with Jenna’s mother’s cancer. In not putting up the letters from home first, CBS encouraged the Survivors to spend their money as quickly as possible on food items and this predictably brought on Jenna’s tears when she didn’t have enough money to outbid Christy for a letter from her mother.
After being the only one going “foodless” and spending $340 on her letter, Christy most graciously let Jeff Probst auction another letter which Jenna was allowed to get for a mere $80. Instead of being grateful, Jenna criticized Christy for outbidding Heidi, saying “I was surprised she did that, but not really.”
Jenna’s nasty attitude was reflective of the Quadruple Alliance with Alex, Heidi and Rob whose mantra seemed to be “the world revolves around us”. The foursome joked that the other three Survivors’ job was to do the work, provide the food, gather the firewood and keep the camp clean while they, the privileged ones, lazily lounged and sunbathed. This sunbathing practically called out for using any of Deena’s left-behind balloons as water bombs. That would be great TV when our “beauties” retaliated against a deaf girl and an old man. Turn the other cheek, guys!
These four “Marie Antoinettes” with their “Let them do all the work while we eat cake” stance must not know any history very well. The French peasants guillotined Marie’s pretty little neck (Matt is out there still with his machete!), Lincoln freed the slaves in 1865, and Brazil followed suit 24 years later in 1889. And it was the scorned Cinderella who won the prize over her pampered ugly stepsisters.
Then there is Survivor history of, most notably, John-Tammy-Zoe-The General alliance from Survivor: Marquesas, the young “cubs” of Survivor: Africa (Brandon-Kim-Lesley-Silas) as well of Roger and Deena (just days before), all great examples of what Rob would later call “hubris” and pride that almost inevitably leads to a swift fall.
Naturally resenting this cockiness, Matt said it was “incomprehensible, treating us like dirt.” Butch called it “ridiculous” while Christy’s earthy description was “jackshit”. Wonder what that would look like in sign language? What it meant, though, was not in doubt as these three finally pulled together and followed Matt’s plan to woo Rob over to their side or else let Rob know they consider him “expendable”.
Rob didn’t need much convincing after Alex’s night-time revelations while the “pretty girls” slept. Wonder if Heidi and Jenna heard anything? Rob seemed less than happy with essentially being told that, at best, he’d be in fourth place. Maybe Alex couldn’t see his face in the dark but I think Alex is incredibly dense, always thinking with his other “head”. I also wondered if Alex’s statement about Heidi and Jenna having an “unbreakable bond” to “never vote against each other” was news to Rob. That would also really encourage him to bolt to the other three Survivors.
And bolt he did, confessing all his past sins to Matt and smiling so crazily at Christy that she asked him what was up? Matt and Christy both showed in this episode that they are cagey, aware players. Christy aptly summed up the situation and Rob’s possible motivations while Matt said his survival skills complemented Rob’s ability to play the game inside/out and that Rob had “zero survival skills”. Nice to see comments like this after all of Rob’s razzing of Matt in past episodes.
It’s hard to say who was playing who here. I got the feeling that Christy and Matt were letting Rob think that he was the initiator of this new alliance realignment strategy when, it seemed, they had independently, along with Butch, got together on their own. They never had to even mention to Rob that he would be considered “expendable” if he didn’t go along with them.
Rob told Christy when she asked if the plan was to vote Alex, Heidi and Jenna off, that he was agreeing to Alex showing an unwillingness to vote against the “pretty girls” that may come back to haunt him not so far down the road.
While Rob pondered his dilemma of a sure fourth place spot, and only that, with the “Marie Antoinettes” or having a real shot at first place with the other three, more unpredictable, Survivors, the immunity challenge revealed some interesting conclusions about the group.
Matthew was viewed as both the most honest and the most in need of therapy. Jenna was seen as unable to survive on her own and as using her sex appeal as a weapon in the game. Heidi was the tribe pick for crush and nude centerfold, proving to me that these guys had been out in the Amazon sun much too long. Maybe they wanted to see if there was a spider bite scar that she just got healed from. Rob won immunity, barely beating out Matt while Alex gloated that Matt should have tried harder since he was now doomed.
After painting cutesy designs on each other’s cheeks, Heidi and Jenna got the surprise of their lives when their buddy Alex got the shaft at Tribal Council. Rob jumped alliances once again, still landing on his feet. He has now eliminated two romantic rivals, Dave and Alex, for the “pretty girls” attentions leaving only the old, married Butch and the “creepy” machete-wielding Matt to stand in his way. I still don’t think he has a shot!
Next time should be interesting as it sinks in to the “two ugly stepsisters”, Heidi and Jenna, that they are now the Cinderellas (“Hey, need some more firewood over here, Heidi!”) and need Rob just to remain equal against the revitalized and threatening “peasants”. Rob too is very vulnerable as these two may choose revenge over reconciliation. Matt and Christy seem to be the new power brokers, a development I am glad to see. Let’s see who will live happily ever after, at least in Episode 11.
