They should have
called this show "the big tease." Don't get be
wrong, I liked the show. However, the show was fundamentally
flawed. The flaw was that anything would happen, other than
a bit of teasing.
I don't know
about other people, but I tuned into this show for the same
reason that I occasionally tune in MTV's "Spring Break,"
namely, to see people making a fool of themselves on national
TV. And, it almost happened, and probably would have happened,
if the show had not been fundamentally flawed from the beginning.
First, what person
is their right mind would cheat on their significant other
on national TV. Well, this is not such a huge flaw. From
watching other reality TV shows, I have observed that, after
spending several days on camera, most people tend to forget
about the cameras and just behave as if there are none.
So, Kaya, who was sucking face with Megan after spending
one day with her and who was sucking face with Alison, one
day later, would have cheated, given enough time. I think
that the same goes for Shannon, who seemed to be swept off
her feet by Tom. But, there is no way that this going to
happen when they are only away from their significant other
for 10 days.
Kaya said "after
five days, I was just beginning to be comfortable with the
idea that I could let go and have fun with another woman."
But, then five days later, the show was over. If Kaya had
been away from Valerie for five more days, I think that
he would have succumbed to temptation. As it was, he was
happy on the final day because he resisted and he did not
make a fool of himself on national TV. But, who couldn't
have passed such a lame test? If Kaya can pass this lame
test, then anyone can.
Again, I tuned
into this show to see people totally embarrass themselves.
And, there were some interesting moments. But, there just
was NOT ENOUGH TIME. This is the really big flaw in the
show. After eight or nine days apart from their significan
others, the action is just beginning to heat up. Then, before
anyone is really tempted, on day 10, the show is over.
What kind of
idiots did the producers think that they were inviting on
the show? Well, I must commend the casting because they
did indeed choose eager beavers, i.e., some of the tempers
were more than ready to jump in the sack. Vanessa told Billy
that he had the green light after their first date. Megan
was playing tonsil hockey with Kaya on their first date.
Alison seemed to like Kaya, and she is self professed to
"have a wild side." But, it was the couples who
were resisting the temptation.
The couples resisted
because they did not want to have a sleazy one-night stand
and then suffer the consequences when their significant
other confronted them. However, if there was more time,
it would not have been a one-night stand; rather, it would
have been a romantic journey.
Mandy said on
the last episode that it was only on the last day that she
felt the transition between "having fun" and "taking
a journey." Shannon was overwhelmed by Tom, and so
on their last night together, they stayed up all night and
watched the sunrise, together. Billy struggled with whether
or not "to hook up with" Vanessa for several days.
In fact, Billy probably struggled the most, since after
going out with Vanessa on his third date, Billy decided
to focus his attention on her. However, even though these
four (Mandy, Shannon, Billy and Kaya) felt like they made
a "real connection" with these singles, yet none
of them were willing to have a one-night stand. And who
would be?
So, the short
of the matter is this. If there had been about three more
episodes and about five or six more days on the island,
the outcome would have been much different. Here is what
I think would have happened:
1. Kaya would have succumbed to temptation and would have
been squirming at the final bonfire. Rather than saying
"I am happy that I did this" and "I have
no regrets," we would have seen a completely different
Kaya--for example, "I cannot believe I did this on
national TV."
2. Mandy would have been doing the horizontal mambo with
Jon, and although they would have tried to hide it from
the cameras at first, after a few days, she would have been
telling the cameras what a great lover he is.
3. Shannon would have convinced herself that she and Tom
are eternal soul mates, and they would have been ordering
room service for days.
4. Billy would have scratched his bald head and said, "Damn
it, I have not gotten laid in two weeks, Mandy will understand;
let's jump in the sack." In other words, Billy would
have justified a roll in the hay.
Of course Valerie
and Andy would have had a miserable time, but who cares
about Valerie and Andy, anyway? LOL
This whole show
was ill conceived from the beginning. The couples were only
apart from their significant others for 10 days, during
which time, each had four dates (and for most, with four
different people). Then, they were invited to focus on one
person and to spend the night with that person. That's not
TEMPTATION!
Unless the singles
are given more time with those who are supposed to be tempted
(e.g., 15 days rather than 10 days), I will not be tuning
into the next show. It is just "Teaser Island."
I would like to see the couples have a romanic journey.
But, as it stands, the couples are offered a cheap one-night
stand, and none are even tempted.
